Together with WWF, we aim to help selected UK farmers replenish over 500 million pints of fresh water, to help nature thrive.*

How refreshing.

At Carlsberg, our pursuit of better goes beyond the beer, since 2023, we've focused on improving the sourcing of our key ingredient, barley. 100% of the barley that goes into our crisp, refreshing Danish Pilsner comes from farms right here in the UK.

Farmland makes up 70% of the UK**, but farming has a footprint. That’s why together with WWF, we work to help farmers across East Anglia implement water-sensitive farming methods. 

We've already replenished over 176 million pints of fresh water, keeping us on track to meet our target of 527 million by 2026. 

 

 

The purpose of our latest project with WWF is to help farmers reduce river pollution and the amount of water they use, meaning there’s more fresh water available for nature to thrive. One of the techniques used is to support farmers to build sediment traps that reduce the amount of pollutants running off farms into local rivers.

Beyond our partnership with WWF, we also took our pursuit of better one step further by working with 23 UK farmers in 2023 to produce 686 tons of regenerative barley for Carlsberg Danish Pilsner – enough to make up to 9 million pints per year!*** That’s also enough barley for about 3.5% of our annual Carlsberg Danish Pilsner production, but this is just the start – our target is to use regenerative barley in 100% of Carlsberg Danish Pilsner brews by 2027. That means our barley will be grown using regenerative techniques which aim to reduce the use of energy and chemical inputs to improve ecosystem health and resilience.**** How refreshing.

***Each year, CMBC produces approximately 1.5m hectolitres (150,000,000 litres) of Carlsberg Danish Pilsner, using around 20,000 tons of barley. 686 tons represents 3.5% of this annual barley total, meaning regenerative barley is estimated to produce up to approximately 549HL (3.5% of 1.5m hectolitres is 52.5HL). This is the equivalent of 9 million pints.

****Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company Limited (CMBC) is taking steps towards “regenerative agriculture” defined as the creation of agricultural systems that aim to improve ecosystem health and resilience (particularly soil health) by reducing the use of energy and chemical inputs in line with the definition provided on page 16 of WWF-UK’s “Land of Plenty” report published February 2022.
